Having a good and close relationship with your son is just as important as it is with your daughter. However, there is still a difference and that is because boys are not so willing to open up as girls do. That is simply because you are a female, to them, it does not matter that you are their mother, they think that you will not be able to understand their problems.
Once you have established a close bond and relationship with your son, you can talk just as easily to him as to your daughter. He will realize that the fact that you are a female, you are still able to understand his problems because you have a lot more life experience.
Start Talking to Your Son Early
So yes, it can be tricky, but it can be done. You can create the same close and open relationship with your son just as you would with your daughter. Because it can be more complicated, it is even more important that your start talking to him at a young age. With time, he will grow into it, later on, he will be relaxed and have an open and casual talk with you. If you don’t know about what topics you should talk about with your son, don’t worry, we have created a short list of topics just for you.
Puberty. This is a topic that you must cover with your son. It will help him understand his body and how it will change over the few years of puberty. You can also talk about the urges that he will have, and you should tell him that, everything is completely normal.
School and Education. For them, this might be a “boring” topic and they might pretend that they are not interested, but you must tell him how important education is. Later on, in his life, he will be thanking you when he finishes and gets a proper job.
Sex. This can become a little awkward topic for both of you, however, you must have it. Sometimes it is better to tell the father of your son to talk about sex with him because boys tend to listen more to male advice regarding sex. You should cover everything about sex, from the importance of the use of condoms to the possibility of a girl getting pregnant. Try to tell him things that you would have wanted to be told about sex at that age. Prepare him for everything, he will appreciate it even if he doesn’t show it.
Drug and Alcohol Use. Every boy knows that this topic will come up sooner or later. Trust us, he will be prepared and he might seem like he knows enough, but the reality is that he doesn’t. Talk to him about the bad things drugs and alcohol can do to you and your body. That drug users don’t have a social life, they lose everyone slowly. Don’t be surprised if he tells you that he has tried a beer or some alcohol before, it is just normal to be curious.
